Euterpe – Guest Mixtape Series

We invited Sydney local band Euterpe to share their ideal mixtape. This is is the first in our band/artist guest series. Your mum shows you this song in the car with the speakers on full blast. You think to yourself “my god, this is gonna catalyse a passion for alternative rock and Ancient Greek modalities”. -Bianca (vocals/guitar) The Nagging Doubts are a great local post-punk act. This song toes the perfect line between groove and soundscape, in my opinion. -Oscar (guitar) My trumpet teacher gave me this album in year 5, and I played it on repeat for years because I didn’t have any other music on my iPod -Conrad (drums) This song is so beautiful and haunting, but somehow simultaneously danceable (or at least foot-tappable…) –Mim (bass) Walking home from uni on a crisp windy Sydney afternoon, you listen to the liquid vibratos of an amber voice coupled with a discordant, fractured guitar. There’s something weird going on out there, man -Bianca This more reflective cut from Lianne La Havas’ 2020 album trades the …

This song explores a magical fusion of analogue jazz-funk! How do you discover new music: I rely on spotify, the jazz programme on eastside radio and the discount section of my local vintage record store to unearth both vintage classics and obscurities.  A song someone has sent you on a mixtape: Start! – The Jam

Name: Oscar Wolfe Tone Byrne Spotify accountLocation: Sydney, Australia Most memorable mixtape moment: When I noticed a girl I’d made a playlist for had changed the name of the playlist and wrote it off as her own creation. A song you want people to hear and why: Waterloo Sunset – The Kinks – It paints a gorgeous picture of a city I love and in my opinion is a viciously underrated song by one of the greatest song writing duos in rock history, Ray and Dave Davies. How do you discover new music: Going to local shows and listening to Orbital Radio and 2SER FM. A song someone has sent you on a mixtape: Broncho – Class Historian Oscar is the cohost of Where is my Mind on Orbital radio and an avid supporter of Sydney’s local live music scene. Also it was produced for the best Season of Drag Race. Ru Paul is my God. How do you discover new music: Normally I don’t as I’ll play the same songs on repeat for years. Name: VickiSpotify account: Account Location: Sydney, Australia Most Memorable Mixtape Moment: Back in the early 2000’s I was a huge Ween tragic, and was always perplexed by how their genius was so misunderstood. It got to the point where I made Ween mixtapes and kept them on me at all times, because I always knew on a night out I would end up trying to convince a stranger that there was more to Ween than Push Th’ Little Daisies. So, as they protested I would hand the mixes out and ask them to listen. Sometimes we exchanged numbers, sometimes we didn’t. I like to think I changed a lot of hearts and minds this way.  A song you want people to hear and why: It’s not a Ween song! It’s actually Xenia Rubinos’ Laugh Clown. A song that opens with the extremely relatable “I haven’t plucked my eyebrows since last month/ One of these days I’m gonna let my moustache grow back in”. Her album Terry Cat was my most played album of 2019. Check it out!! How do you discover new music: These days, Spotify …

Name:  DavidSpotify account:  Scotton Drive Location: Knaresborough, UK. Most memorable mixtape moment:Discovering a whole new world of music when in 1987 my friend sent me a mixtape of various tunes he recorded from Gilles Peterson’s Mad on Jazz show on Radio London. It changed my musical tastes, and got me into dj-ing jazz, funk and rare grooves, running club nights, doing radio shows etc. Not bad for a C90 cassette. A song you want people to hear and why: Tezeta by Melenelik Wesnatchew. It is just the most beautiful song about memories and loss – an Amharic/Ethiopian song form Tizita. How do you discover new music:I used to spend hours in record shops digging through crates of second hand vinyl, but now it’s most likely to be through Spotify, Instagram and friends sending me music. A song someone has sent you on a mixtape:Lee Remick by The Go Betweens.David is an artist, curator and musician. His band is called Scotton Drive.

Name: Benjamin LøzningerSpotify account: https://open.spotify.com/user/lozningerLocation: Brooklyn, USA + France Most memorable mixtape moment: When there was no internet and that you had to record songs on tapes while playing indie radio shows.  A song you want people to hear and why:  (That’s SUCH a hard one to just choose ONE song but for now:) “Sea Foam” by Land Of Talk, such an underrated band, and that song (and the whole album) conveys so much energy, emotions and beauty.  How do you discover new music:  As an exercise, I’ve been releasing a “FrenchBK mixtape” every month for the past few years, with new songs so that I can discover new bands all the time. A song someone has sent you on a mixtape:  “Feed me with your kiss” by My Bloody Valentine, it was a very long time ago but it changed my perspective on music forever. Benjamin is involved in so many projects that he probably doesn’t know them all himself… He’s mostly a French visual artist, musician-singer-producer, art director & graphic designer. He shares his time between …
