Most Memorable Mixtape Moment:
Back in the early 2000’s I was a huge Ween tragic, and was always perplexed by how their genius was so misunderstood. It got to the point where I made Ween mixtapes and kept them on me at all times, because I always knew on a night out I would end up trying to convince a stranger that there was more to Ween than Push Th’ Little Daisies. So, as they protested I would hand the mixes out and ask them to listen. Sometimes we exchanged numbers, sometimes we didn’t. I like to think I changed a lot of hearts and minds this way.

A song you want people to hear and why:
It’s not a Ween song! It’s actually Xenia Rubinos’ Laugh Clown. A song that opens with the extremely relatable “I haven’t plucked my eyebrows since last month/ One of these days I’m gonna let my moustache grow back in”. Her album Terry Cat was my most played album of 2019. Check it out!!

How do you discover new music:
These days, Spotify radio! I also read music reviews, listen to TV and film soundtracks, and listen to 2Ser in the car (107.3).

A song someone has sent you on a mixtape:
Breaking Glass by David Bowie, with one of my favourite lines of all time “you’re such a wonderful person, but you’ve got problems”. It opened up my world to the wonder of Bowie’s Low and another side of this icon.

I grew up in Sydney’s South West, where being a brown kid who loved Marilyn Manson and Radiohead meant I didn’t always fit in. In a world where hip hop and rap ruled, I loved the Beatles and Lou Reed. I have since then grown my record collection to include way more BIPOC artists and artists from all around the globe. I’ve embraced my background and dove into Spanish language music. Music is all about discovery; my all time favourite time of year is the four day WOMAD weekend in Adelaide, where music, art and dance from all around the world collide into an utopian bubble of hourly discovery. It’s the very best of times.
