MIXTAPE

MIXTAPE SEVEN: TIME MACHINE

We asked you to  turn back time and hear a song that made an impact on you in your youth. Give us your teen angst,  music you would dance to wildly in your room, coming of age song.

Falco – Der Kommissar

Yes, I was a member of the Falco fanclub in my youth. I’ve started to hear this song in a lot of recent films. Who’s the cool kid now?
AGE: 12

Oasis – Supersonic

This song made me feel like I was really COOL getting the bus to school when I was 14. I felt like a real rock n roll star….. couldn’t have been further from it.
AGE: 14

Police – Bring on the Night

Reminds me when I was sitting for hours in front of the stereo in the leaving room, headphones on, listening to my favourite vinyls and feeling the music so deeply in my whole being.
AGE: 13

Blondie – Hanging On The Telephone

I freakin love this song. Teenage angst at it’s best.
AGE: hmmm…early teens?

Orange Juice – Blue Boy

I loved this song. Would listen to it on repeat for hours. I still love it. I think my love of stripy t-shirts may have even been inspired by Edwin Collins.
AGE: 14

The Smiths – Ask

Every time I listen to this song I remember the feeling of discovering The Smiths back when I was 12. It was one of the most pleasant summers i’ve ever lived through and that guitar riff just feels like a warm breeze to me.
AGE: 12

Arctic Monkeys – From the Ritz to the Rubble

Nothing takes me back to balmy evenings drinking in the park/sneaking into pubs underage like this album, and this song captures so much of that pent up energy of youth. That opening line never fails to make me want to drink something bad and strong!
AGE: 16

Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians – Circle

This song takes me right back to the early 90’s (I got to the song a little late)

Mountain Goats – This Year

First song I ever heard on triple J after flipping over from our local country station. My little mind was blown.
AGE: 14

My Chemical Romance – The End.

Well before I entered teenagehood and became a mad fan, my dad had The Black Parade CD in the car and we used to listen to it on long drives to the zoo and Sydney Olympic Park.
AGE: 8

Donna Summer – State of Independence

A bedroom dancing song – still have the moves.
