Buckle up. Your favourite commute song – whether it is a short trip to the shops, your commute to work or a longer road trip. A song that keeps you company, daydreaming and moving when traveling. Choose your mode of transport: Car ride, scooter, walking your dog, ferry, skateboard, train, roller skating, bus, plane, rocketship, submarine, yacht, jogging – you decide.
Track 1: Hear This – Jarami
Mode of transport: Car roadtrip
My daughter and I have this loooong playlist for our roadtrips and every time this song shows up, and especially when the contagious bass kicks in, it made us sing along and wanting to go on a crazy adventure beyond borders and dreams.
Track 2: Big Chief – Professor Longhair
Mode of transport: car roadtrip
This song has kept me company on recent roadtrips.
Track 3: LA Woman – The Doors
Mode of transport: Bus route Sydney to Canberra (the last long bus trip I took)
I believe LA Woman is the greatest road trip song of all time. It has hypnotising back beat that will always sync up with the rotation of any car or bus wheel. The tune takes you on a journey that includes an array of musical bumps and u turns, you can hear the engine of Robby Kriegers guitar really roar in this one.
Track 4: Price of Gasoline – Bloc Party
Mode of Transport: Car
As a driver of a mid-sized car…I can relate…this song just rocks and gets the juice pumping, wakes you up and keeps you alert while driving.
Track 5: Anemone – The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Mode of Transport: Walking
Walking around Sydney.
Track 6: Habbie Doobie – The Texas Gentlemen
Mode of transport: Walking
Track 7: Walk On By – Dionne Warwick
Mode of Transport: Walking
The best walking song, the beat and vocals just go so well. Desperate, upbeat and hopeful. Walk with foolish pride!
Track 8: 6 Underground – Sneaker Pimps
Mode of Transport: Tram
This song reminds me of when I lived in Melbourne catching trams around the place.
Track 9: Alone in Kyoto – Air
Mode of Transport: Train
Track 10: Miracle Rooftop – Metronomy
Mode of Transport: Walking
I love listening to this song on repeat when I go for walk. Helps me chill.
Track 11: Riverside – Agnes Obel
Mode of Transport: Car
Track 12: Reunion – The Benoit/Freeman Project
Mode of Transport: Long car trip
I came across this song when I was working at a record store in the mid-90s (Brashs for those who can remember). I then listened to the album that it came from, The Benoit/Freeman Project and loved it.
I put this on when I am starting off a long car trip as it gets me smiling and puts me in a better mood. In fact I listen to this song even when I am walking, travelling on the train/bus or tram and when I need a pick me up. Just be careful when you are driving; I have had a few near misses when it comes to driving a bit too fast :-).
I love the contemporary, pop sound of this song; The Benoit/Freeman Project is made up of David Benoit and Russ Freeman and excellent jazz session musicians, this album has some great pop songs on it; even Kenny Loggins makes an appearance!
Track 13: Feel – Major Leagues
Mode of Transport: Car
This song feels like the ending of a coming-of-age movie and is ideal for leaving, or going somewhere. It’s also the perfect tempo for driving.
Track 14: Perimeter – Gidge
Mode of Transport: Car
Track 15: You – Nihls Frahm
Mode of Transport: Train
It’s just the most beautiful piece of music. Perfect for a long train journey. I have it on repeat. It gives me time to think, reflect and relax…looking out of the window as the blurred images of fields and towns whizz past.
Track 16: Red Barchetta – Rush
Mode of Transport: Car
I’m lucky to be pretty much right next to my place of work, so my commute doesn’t last as long as a song anymore. I’m no fan of driving, but whenever I have to jump into a car to get where I need to go, this is the song I put on. It captures the essence of a good drive, adds a bit of drama, and makes the experience feel a bit special.
Track 17: Long Way To Go – Alice Cooper
Mode of Transport: Car
It’s super exciting and puts you in an adventurous frame of mind.
Track 18: Warmduscher – Midnight Dipper
Mode of Transport: Bicycle
Great banger for a pedal around town.
Track 19: Wait in the Car – The Breeders
Mode of Transport – Car
I like my music loud in the car when I am driving alone.
